I have a theory.
Most women don’t actually dislike statement earrings.
They dislike the headache that comes with wearing them.
We’ve all done it. Fallen in love with a gorgeous pair, worn them for an hour and then spent the rest of the evening wondering how socially acceptable it would be to whip them off halfway through dinner.
Life’s too short for sore earlobes.
So when I started making Smudges, I knew one thing for certain.
I wanted people to pick up a pair and immediately say…
“Wait… is this it?”
Because that’s exactly what happens.
The secret isn’t magic.
It’s paper.
Yep. Paper.
Every pair starts life as a sheet of paper that I’ve painted by hand in my little studio. I spend far too much time mixing colours until they’re just right, then I cut the shapes, seal everything in resin and finish them by hand.
The resin makes them durable.
The paper keeps them ridiculously light.
It’s probably the only time in your life someone will tell you paper jewellery is actually the practical option.
I make earrings for women who don’t want to blend in.
I love colour.
Not because I think everyone should dress like a walking rainbow (although I fully support that if that’s your thing).
I love those little moments where you’re wearing jeans and a white T-shirt, but your earrings are quietly saying, “She seems fun.”
Or you’re heading to a wedding and you want one thing that makes the whole outfit feel more you.
Or you’ve spent twenty minutes convincing yourself you don’t need another colourful pair…
…before buying them anyway.
No judgement here.
Handmade means no two are exactly the same.
Every sheet of paper is painted by hand, so every pair ends up slightly different.
I actually love that.
You’re not getting something stamped out by a machine thousands of times.
You’re getting something I sat down and made because colour makes me ridiculously happy, and I’m hoping it’ll do the same for you.
Wear the big earrings.
Life already gives us enough reasons to play it safe.
Your jewellery doesn’t have to be one of them.
If you’ve been avoiding statement earrings because they’re uncomfortable, maybe it’s time to give them another chance.
Your ears deserve better.
